Talking about the Tywi – The Romans

On the particularly stormy Thursday evening of 12 March 2026,  the RDCA was honoured to have archaeologist Ken Murphy from Heneb present the first talk in our programme organised under the banner title of “Talking about the Tywi”.

Ken gave a fact-filled and entertaining talk about how and when the Romans arrived in Wales, the forts and roads they built, and the process and luck involved with discovering buried Roman remains.

It was fascinating to see aerial shots of the valley running down to Llandovery, where the old Roman roads and forts could be viewed  as lines across the fields.

Despite the bad weather the Royal Oak dining room was packed with 40+ people, many of whom expressed their thanks for a fascinating evening.

The RDCA would like to offer its thanks to Amanda and the team at the Royal Oak for allowing us to use their dining room for this event.

This was perhaps the perfect way to start our talks programme. The aim is simple: to bring the history, culture, and character of the Tywi Valley to life through the people who know it best.

Ken certainly succeeded with his subject of “The Romans in the Tywi Valley”. Thank you Ken, for an engaging evening.
