Standing Up for Wales With a New Pantomime Project

A new community theatre initiative is being launched in Llandovery to raise awareness of the large‑scale energy developments proposed across Wales, including 230‑metre wind turbines, battery parks, and extensive new pylons. The organisers hope the project will help residents understand the scale of the plans and give people across Wales a way to make their voices heard.

To achieve this, the production team is assembling a pilot group of enthusiastic amateur actors and backstage volunteers, aged 16 and over, to create a twenty‑minute outdoor pantomime titled Alice in Plunderland. The show will present the issues in a humorous, accessible, and engaging way, using colourful costumes and simple but striking props. Volunteers are also being sought to assist with costume work, prop‑making, and filming, as the performance will be recorded with a live audience and shared on social media so that other groups across Wales can stage it themselves.

Read‑throughs, auditions, and volunteer sign‑ups will take place at Llandovery Youth and Community Centre, Market Square, on:

  • Monday 23 March, 6.30–7.45pm and 7.45–9.00pm
  • Wednesday 25 March, 6.30–7.45pm and 7.45–9.00pm

A rehearsal schedule will be issued the following week based on cast availability. Rehearsals will run twice weekly, with participants only required to attend sessions relevant to their scenes. The organisers aim to stage the performance on Saturday 2 May, ahead of the forthcoming elections, meaning the project will progress quickly despite the busy lambing season.

The team behind the project emphasises the value of community theatre in bringing together a wide range of skills and, importantly, in strengthening local connections between performers and audiences. They hope the pantomime will inspire collaboration and conversation at a time when collective engagement is especially important.

The project is directed by Barbie Davies.
